i tried to see if locally sourced cheap pine might be used to get around the (good pieces of big timber arent cheap and easy to find) problem ... starting with pieces 2 by 2 plained pine

each piece was cut to roughly the right thickness with a small skil saw
this removes a lot of of wood but really only is easy with a non twisted blade

then all were glued

then out with the electric planer and sander ,flat blades like electric planers !

then wedges were put at each root to make a constant angle of 4 degrees and a paint job
with experior wood paint the grey bits were added to try to break up the lines a bit

putting in wedges was the pain in the ass bit if one is slightly off the whole blade
(probabely including the plywood hub disks ) is thrown off
each blade needs a wedge top and bottom
the blades are basically the same dimensions as the big gyreum machine but have no
twist in them so some performance will be lost (noise might be gained too). but they were very quick to
make up (and cheap) mainly because only the back side needed shaping hopefully theyle be
tested (or fall apart due to dubious weather proof glue) ) soon

I have 24 Grade N40, (30mmx46mmx10mm) magnets for sale. Last year we got over (from UK), enough magnets to build two of Hugh's turbines. Only building one now...hence the 24 for sale. We are selling for €165 + cost of shipping to your address, or if you can arrange pick up from Dublin? This is exactly what it cost us! Cheers, Paul

coils wired up with starts and ends outside

this is the stator for the 3.6 m machine ,coils have 80 turns 1.7 this time and came out a little on the fat side, not much clearance on narrow parts of the mould or between coils but fitted ok (thicker wire and my winding probabely)

after waxing (floor wax) and placing in the fiberglass cloth i slid in coils in the wrong place and had to move them in the mould ,not a good idea as the cloth moved too leaving bubbles underneath , plenty of teeth gnashing at this point , the little fiberglass tabs on the coils helped keep things in the right shape though

24 hours later opened her up and convinced the stator to come out at gun point ,it was tight (probabely not enough wax around the island and rim) came out in the end ok, the back and lid didnt stick at all

next up is the frame and rotors ,
[
the blade hub is for fibreglass props but will be binned as its a mixture of welded cast and mild steel using ordinary rods
this little adventure in welding is probabely an accident waiting to happen
i came across a small engineering shop run by a helpfull man (paddy) who machined up the rotors
from 12mm plate , had a few alignment problems (should have left the hub with him) half an hour with a good file and everything
fitted together ,paddy reconed they were a bit tricker than he first thought (big diameter on a lathe) at the start he recommended
lathing down the plates so i just went along

the frame is to the same specs as gryeum but using as much as possible of the stuff i have lying around
nice and rusty too
next to get some resin ,the magnets are epoxy coated so i might spoil meself with epoxy resin buts its expensive
grs in cork sell an epoxy (3kg) for 62.00 plus vat ,

Hi all,
Started building turbine last year, using Hugh's plans. Hoping to mount on self standing pole (10m) with no guy wire supports! I have modified a steel tilting "street light" pole. The pole is bolted to a concrete base buried below the ground. I live in the City and hope the neighbours won't object!

The pole is a "well used" ex. City Council type, my brother got it from a friend? I welded on the round base plate & gussets. Its attached to the concrete base with 25mm galvanised bolts.

I used just over one 1100kgs of concrete for the foundation base.

Gusset detail

The oval hole in the pole is where the service cable would normally enter, when the pole is buried in the ground. I will run my cable underground via a duct which passes through the concrete, at the pole base.

Pole top detail

Note pole extension (standing on the left of the green pole) to be added on....as soon as I can figure out a way to raise them up!
Final assembly......almost

Hi,

A group of us based in Cork city are looking to build the smaller wind turbine as specified in Hugh Pigotts design. For this we require eight magnets 2"*1"*1/2" grade 35. There are two websites in his design. Both would cost around €100 including delivery for eight magnets.

Is there anybody out there who has left over magnets and would be willing to sell them in ROI?.

Alternativly can anyone suggest a cheaper option, different distributor maybe?

We are not planning to start a project until early 2008.

Thanks,
I'm sure a few of you are looking for magnets - so I suggested maybe you could pool together and order a batch from china, which is probably the cheapest option - at least for people living relatively close.

I've been pretty busy in my studies, so I'm sorry I didn't get over to help put up the large turbine again - everything went well I trust.

After all my efforts I hope you will all try carving your own blades, but if you are having trouble or can't source the wood - I am going to carve a few sets of blades for the smaller machine (out of my Austrian Larch of course). If any one is interested in buying a set, let me know.

So here is the first photo the coil winder setup.

Any one have any tips on joining the 3 wires together they seem a bit bulky I saw on otherpower that they used strips of copper and crimped them and then soldered.

Hi I started winding the coils for our 3.6m turbine using 35 turns of 1.5mm 3 in hand. It's going to be 24v I would like 48v but would have to upgrade our batteries and they are only new hoppecke opz 600 at a price of 4200 euro and we can't aforde the same again also if we added another 12 batteries the AH would be 800 at 48v and that's to much for us.

We got the 3.6m turbine up on Saturday 27th October

All painted

Who turned up Miriam who is using the camera from left to right Johnny, Jimmy, Peter, Niall, Urey and Sean

Peter helping the blades on

We decided to use locknut's on the stator

Colm lifting his turbine

Johnny guides her up

The weather was starting to blow in the morning and by the time we had the machine together we had a nice NW gale it's not a good idea to put up turbines in a gale but we plowed on and up it went and the minuet the brake was released it furled.

We saw over 23 amps at 56v it was averaging around 10A it was hard to photo the amp meter at it's best but Miriam got this shot of 20A there is a shadow on the left the true needle is the one on the right.

I liked the way it handled the strong wind very good design Hugh.
The light ply on the tail looks a bit light but the joint looks better than the French one.

Anyone who is interested in sourcing old draw knives could have a look at ebay, I have already found a few that look good but we will have to wait til the post man delivers them to satisfy my curiosity (and to make a start on some new blades)!
I found some finishing planes too but they were quite expensive and brand new - I don't suppose anyone has an old one that they don't want? i am still waiting to find spokeshaves but they are prob easy enough to get.
Another way to find old wood working tools is to talk to woodcarvers at markets and craft fairs. We stopped for a coffee and sandwich on the way home from the Gyreum on saturday and as luck would have it I met a dutch wood carver selling his work at a little market. He gave me his phone number and said to give him two weeks to ask around but that he often comes across nice old tools and would be happy to pass them on. :)

the draw knives I found on ebay have arrived and they are really nice with good blades, lovely old steel and very sharp. Both are quite old, early 1900's I think and one has the nice feature of handles that fold over onto the blade for ease of carrying in toolbags but very secure when opened because of wee balls that slot into place and hold them securely - strange but true!

Bernard told me that you can buy new draw knives in Quillans tool shop in Dublin for about 60euro and all woodworking tools that you might require.
